CASE STUDY: The Salvation Army - United States Western Territory

A flexible financial reporting application that's simple to use

Business Problem:
The Salvation Army (TSA) uses Lotus Notes for messaging and applications (mostly internally developed). In the Western US, one of their applications was designed to pull data from their Great Plains financial system and provide it securely to TSA managers. Unfortunately, Notes is not well suited to this sort of reporting application. For example, there were actually a total of 156 Notes databases that, in reality, represented 2 reporting applications - one related to investment account balances kept at a central location and the other related to departmental budget/expenditure reporting.

Solution:
Guidance developed a solution based on SQL Server BI Platform using Reporting Services. The system extracts data from the Great Plains financial system to access income and expenditure information and compare that information with departmental budgets set up at the beginning of the year. The users access the reports through a browser and can define report parameters. The system can be scaled to create centralized access to 600 regions using Great Plains to provide reporting across multiple internal organizations.

Easy to use reporting that personalizes data access for each user. Granular financial reports for multiple organizations.

Benefits:
  • Ease of use - users can use a browser to access pre-configured reports, yet with the flexibility to define their report criteria.
  • Faster report development and delivery.
  • Users can download their own data for further analysis and export into Excel.

Customer Profile:  The Salvation Army is an international Christian church working in 109 countries worldwide. As a registered charity, The Salvation Army demonstrates its Christian principles through social welfare provision. In the United States alone, TSA helps more than 42 million people through programs and services that address poverty, domestic violence, homelessness, hunger, drug addiction, gang activity and illiteracy.
