CASE STUDY: North Orange County Regional Occupational Program (NOCROP)

Sharepoint implementation for Staff and Student Portal

Business Problem:
As with most education centers, NOCROP manages student and course information using a Student Information System (SIS). The Oracle-based system is central to NOCROP’s operations, but does not support the types of online functionality that NOCROP wanted to implement. Specifically there were no points of integration between the NOCROP website and the SIS, and there is no automated way for information to be published to the web. Also SIS systems do not typically provide online course-management functions that students and teachers can use collaboratively, for example, discussion forums, shared online document repositories, messaging, etc.

Solution:
NOCROP engaged Guidance to assist with the deployment, configuration, and customization of Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server (SPS), including integration with Active Directory. Specifically, SPS was deployed to provide school, faculty and student portal areas and class collaboration sites. Guidance created a customized user provisioning for the portal, allowing automatic creation of Active Directory (AD) accounts when a new student account is created in the SIS system. Another feature was the Password Reset UI, a web page that allows students to reset their AD passwords.

Faculty and students can access day-to-day information. Course description and detailed assignments are highlighted.

Benefits:
  • Branded look and feel for portal interface
  • Access to all 34 teaching locations using the NOCROP portal
  • Ability for staff to easily publish class calendars and communicate with students
  • Student can submit assignments through the portal
  • Students are exposed to best-of-breed portal solution, providing a connection with technologies that they will encounter in the world of work
