Hilton needed a unified, real-time forecast management system to allow quick and accurate analysis and projection of revenue and occupancy data across more than 500 hotels. Although a forecast methodology already existed, each of Hilton's hotel brands had its own application, causing a fragmented overview of the overall data. Too much administrative time was wasted assembling the data and analysis was often based on incomplete information.
Guidance created a centralized solution around Microsoft SQL Server 2000 to enable data exchange between five different legacy systems. The solution was designed on .Net Enterprise Servers, as well as Visual Basic, Com+, Active Server Pages, XML and Windows. Implementing SQL Server was the best decision due to its superior capability of handling the many challenges of data warehousing, such as multiple data sources and the need to function across multiple time zones in real-time. The application of a 3-tier data warehouse structure will allow Hilton easy expansion into an enterprise data warehouse in the future. Also, use of XML will enable multiple records to be updated in one transaction.
